A harrowing investigation into the bizarre death of a young woman in the garbage chute of a luxury apartment has won the documentary award at the first national podcast awards announced tonight (eds: April 1).
Fairfax’s The Age produced `Phoebe’s Fall’, a six-part series on what a coroner found was a “tragic accident”. A 13-strong team, including award-winning investigative reporters, revealed failings in the investigation as noted by top legal, forensic and police experts.
Judge Jarrod Pickford said the compelling series demonstrated a powerful use of the medium. Pickford, founder of Podmatcher, a new marketplace for podcasters, said SBS’s entry in this category, a series on gay murder in Adelaide, was hugely competitive.
Over 200 entries were received in the 10 categories of podcasts for the awards, to be announced at a ceremony at the Giant Dwarf Theatre, Sydney.
Pickford said, “We are confident that the success of these awards means they shall emerge as a vital and permanent part of the national media.”
