Gender balance won out at Australia’s first national podcasting award ceremony held in Sydney tonight (eds: April 1).

Of the 10 awards, women took out categories covering business, politics, lifestyle, industry and TV/film.

Judge Jarrod Pickford said, “We were thrilled to find that, generally speaking, the 210 entries confirmed our belief that women excel at story-telling on podcasts covering many serious issues.”

This confirmed a recent survey by Mr Pickford’s new podcasters’ marketplace, Podmatcher, which found an equal split in responses across the sexes.

He said competition for the awards was fierce, with some decisions coming down to a decimal point difference.

Australia’s top podcasters were celebrated in Sydney last night (eds: 2 April) in the first national awards for this new industry.  About 200 guests were at the Giant Dwarf Theatre to see the awards for best podcasts covering 10 categories and sponsored by Podmaster, an innovative podcasters’ marketplace.

One of the judges was Jarrod Pickford from tech startup Podmatcher, “It seems just yesterday that few people seemed to know much about podcasting. Now not only have Australians taken to with it skill and enthusiasm but as these awards show their innovation helps put them near the global forefront of this industry.”


The awards drew 208 entries, with this number likely to double next year.
